One of the most common questions we get asked is how long a loft conversion takes from start to finish. The honest answer depends on the type of conversion, but here's a realistic timeline.
A Velux (rooflight) conversion is the quickest option: typically 4–5 weeks on site. Because no changes are made to the roof structure, the work is relatively straightforward — new floor, insulation, staircase, electrics, plaster and decoration.
A dormer loft conversion — the most popular choice in Kent — usually takes 6–8 weeks. The first week involves scaffolding and structural alterations, followed by the dormer construction, then internal fit-out including the bathroom, electrics and plastering.
Hip-to-gable conversions take 8–10 weeks as they involve more extensive structural work to reshape the roof. Mansard conversions are the most complex at 10–12 weeks.
Before work starts on site, allow 4–8 weeks for design, structural calculations, Building Regulations applications and (if needed) planning permission. We handle all of this at TEMBOK, but it's important to factor this lead time into your plans.
Common causes of delays include: unexpected structural issues discovered once the roof is opened up, slow Building Control inspections, lead times on specialist materials (roof windows, staircases), and poor weather during the roofing phase.
Our advice: start the planning process 3–4 months before you want work to begin. At TEMBOK, we provide a detailed programme at quotation stage so you know exactly what to expect and when.
