Formwork quality
Formwork is the mould the concrete is cast into, and its quality directly determines the finish quality — a well-built, properly sealed formwork gives sharp edges and a consistent surface, while a rough or reused formwork produces visible defects that grinding can't fully correct.
Complex shapes — cast stairs, curved worktop edges, integrated upstands — need bespoke formwork built for that job alone, which takes considerably more time than a simple rectangular worktop or slab.
Curing time
Concrete has to cure for a fixed period before it can be ground, polished or loaded, and this cannot be compressed regardless of how the programme is going. A quote or programme that promises a fast turnaround on a cast concrete element should be questioned — the physics of curing don't change to fit a deadline.

Grinding and finish stages
A polished finish is built up through multiple grinding passes with progressively finer abrasives, and the number of passes affects both cost and how glossy or exposed-aggregate the final look is. Fewer passes cost less but leave a rougher, less refined surface.
Exposing aggregate — grinding back further to reveal the stone within the concrete for a decorative look — takes more passes and more skill to do evenly than a simple smooth-ground finish.
Access, handling and wastage
Cast elements like worktops or stair flights are heavy and often need to be moved into position by more than one person or with lifting equipment — poor access adds real cost here, the same as with any heavy material.
Sealer choice also affects price and ongoing stain resistance; a premium penetrating sealer costs more upfront than a basic topical sealer but performs better long-term, particularly in kitchen use.
