
The quickest fix on the market is a UPVC capping board screwed straight over the rotten timber. It looks finished from the ground and it's cheap, which is exactly why it's so common — and exactly why it fails. The rot carries on underneath, invisible, until it's undermined the fixings holding the whole run up.
A repair that actually lasts starts by removing that possibility rather than working around it.
The sequence of work
The order matters. You can't judge how much timber is actually rotten until the capping and old boards are off, and you shouldn't rehang a gutter onto fascia that hasn't been checked first — that's how the same failure repeats in a few years.
- Take down guttering and any capping along the affected run
- Strip back fascia and soffit to expose the full extent of rot, not just the visible section
- Cut out and replace timber back to sound material — patching a rotten board rarely holds a fixing securely
- Prime and seal all cut ends before fixing new timber
- Reset gutter brackets at correct falls before rehanging
- Reinstate or improve eaves ventilation where it was blocked
Why capping over rot doesn't solve anything
UPVC capping is designed to sit tight against the timber it covers, which means any moisture already in that timber has nowhere to evaporate to. Instead of drying out, the wood stays damp permanently and the rot continues under a surface that looks fine. Eventually the fixing screws pull out of timber with no strength left in it, and the capping comes away in wind — often with no warning beforehand.
A cosmetic patch of filler or hard-set repair paste over a soft spot behaves the same way. It seals moisture in rather than out, and it can't restore structural strength to a board that's carrying gutter brackets and its own weight.
Interfaces with the roof and guttering
Fascia sits at the junction of three separate elements — the roof covering, the gutter, and the ventilation path into the loft — so a proper repair has to consider all three, not just the timber. If the gutter fall was wrong to begin with, refitting it at the same fall guarantees the fascia gets wet again. If ventilation was blocked by insulation pushed into the eaves, that needs correcting from inside the loft as part of the same job.
Where the roof covering itself is close to the end of its life, it's worth having it looked at alongside the fascia, since scaffolding or ladder access is already in place.
How you know it's actually fixed
New timber should be dry and hard right through, not just at the surface, and every cut end should be sealed before it's covered by trim or paint. The gutter should run clear with a visible fall towards the outlet, with no standing water after rain. If ventilation was part of the cause, check that airflow at the eaves hasn't been closed up again by the new boarding.
Common questions
Do you need to replace the whole run or just the rotten section?+
Only the section that's actually soft needs replacing, but we always check a metre or so either side of visible rot, since moisture travels along a run before it shows on the surface.
Will new timber fascia need repainting straight away?+
It needs priming, including the end grain, before it's fixed, and a proper top coat once it's in place. Skipping the end-grain priming is one of the most common reasons the same joint rots again.
Can this be done without scaffolding?+
Short runs are often accessible from a tower or ladder, but longer or higher runs need proper access equipment for safety. We'll assess access on the site visit and price it accordingly.
