
Birch plywood is sold in a range of grades that look nearly identical from a small sample but perform very differently once an edge is cut and left exposed, which makes it one of the easier materials for a quote to quietly downgrade.
The price differences between competing quotes usually trace back to core grade, thickness and how much finishing time has gone into the exposed edges.
Core grade and void content
A void-free or near-void-free core grade costs more per sheet than a standard grade with occasional internal gaps in the veneer layers, and that difference only becomes visible once an edge is cut, at which point a void shows as an unsightly gap in an otherwise clean striped edge.
For furniture where the edge is exposed as a design feature, this grade difference matters enormously to the finished look even though it's invisible on the uncut face of the sheet.
Sheet thickness and sizing
Thicker sheets cost more and are used where a span or a load genuinely requires the extra stiffness; specifying a thinner sheet than the design needs is a way to cut material cost that can show up later as noticeable flex or sag under load.
Sheet size and how efficiently a design's components are cut from it also affects cost — a layout with a lot of awkward, non-standard component sizes wastes more of each sheet than one planned to nest efficiently, and that wastage is reflected in the price.
Edge finishing and machining
Because the edge is usually left exposed, it needs sanding to a clean, even finish and sealing with lacquer or oil, and that finishing labour is a genuine cost that a rushed job will skip or shorten, leaving a rougher, less durable edge.
Curved cuts, radiused corners and any complex internal cut-outs take longer to machine cleanly in plywood than in MDF, since tear-out on the face veneer is a real risk if the cutting speed and tooling aren't right for the material.
What a cheaper quote has usually substituted
The most common downgrade is a lower core grade that will show voids at any exposed edge, followed closely by a reduced edge-sealing schedule that leaves the exposed layers more vulnerable to moisture than the sample suggested.

Common questions
Why does core grade matter so much if the sheet looks fine before cutting?+
Voids in a lower grade are internal and invisible until an edge is cut, at which point they show as gaps in the striped pattern that's usually the whole point of choosing birch ply. A quote using a lower grade will look identical until the furniture is made.
Is a thinner sheet always a false economy?+
Not always — for lightly loaded, well-supported panels a thinner sheet is entirely appropriate. It becomes a false economy specifically where the design needs the stiffness of a thicker sheet to avoid sag over a span.
How can I tell if edge finishing has been done properly?+
A well-finished edge feels smooth with no rough fibres, and the seal should look even along its length rather than patchy. Ask what sealing product and how many coats are specified before comparing prices.
