Oak porches in Kent

A well made oak porch changes the whole front of a house. Ours are designed for the building they join, not chosen from a catalogue of kits.

What a bespoke oak porch involves

A porch is the first thing anyone sees, and proportion is everything. A bespoke oak porch is designed against the facade it joins: the width of the entrance, the height of the door, the pitch of the existing roof and the character of the brickwork or tile hanging all decide the design. That is the difference from a kit porch, where the house has to accept whatever the catalogue offers.

Frames are built in green oak with traditional pegged joints. The oak is left to silver naturally or finished with a UV oil, and the roof is covered to match the house, whether that is clay peg tile, slate or plain tile. Leadwork where the porch roof meets the house is dressed properly, because that junction is where cheap porches fail.

Designs range from a simple open canopy on brackets to a fully enclosed glazed porch that works as a draught lobby and somewhere to leave boots and coats. Enclosing the porch changes the planning position and adds the door, glazing and heating questions, so it is decided early rather than halfway through the build.

Many porches fall within permitted development, but the limits are tighter than people expect, and listed buildings, flats and conservation area frontages need consent. We check the position at the free site visit, measure the entrance properly and then quote in writing for the whole job, from the brick plinth to the roof covering.

FAQs

Oak Porches — frequently asked

Does an oak porch need planning permission?

Many porches are permitted development within size limits, but listed buildings, flats and some conservation area frontages need consent, and an enclosed porch is treated differently from an open canopy. We confirm the position before quoting.

How long does an oak porch take to build?

The frame is made in the workshop over a few weeks while the plinth and base are built on site. Erection and roofing usually take one to two weeks, so the disruption at your front door is short.

Will the green oak crack or twist?

Surface shakes are normal as green oak seasons and do not weaken the frame. Joints are cut to allow for movement, and the pegs tighten as the timber dries.

Can the porch be glazed?

Yes. Part glazed and fully enclosed designs are common, with oak framed glazing and a proper external door. An enclosed porch needs a little more thought on ventilation and heating, which we design in from the start.
