The low-maintenance regime that still matters
Washing the cladding down annually removes the grime and algae build-up that dulls the colour over time — it's a low-effort task but skipping it entirely does show.
Checking trims and expansion joints for movement or gaps opening up is worth doing at the same time, since these are the parts of the system most likely to need attention.
Keeping the drainage path behind the boards clear of debris at the base of the wall prevents moisture building up where it can't escape.
Early warning signs
Discolouration concentrated along a cut edge or at a corner trim, rather than spread evenly across a board, points to a sealing or capping detail that wasn't done properly at installation.
Boards that have visibly bowed or cracked at a joint usually indicate expansion gaps that weren't left wide enough, forcing the boards against each other as they move with temperature.
Water staining below a horizontal joint or trim is a sign that the lap or drainage detail at that junction isn't shedding water the way it should.
Repair versus replace
Because these systems are designed around discrete boards, a damaged or failing board is normally replaced individually rather than repaired — there's no equivalent to sanding out a defect the way you would with a natural material.
