A lasting fix treats the cabinet as what it is — a small enclosed space holding heat-producing equipment — and gives that space a proper way to move air in and out. Anything short of that is a temporary improvement at best.
This is joinery work with an electrical and sometimes structural interface, since equipment, cabling and occasionally a fireplace unit all sit within the same cavity and have to be planned together.
What has to be opened up
The back and base panels of the affected compartment usually need to come off or be modified to form proper vent openings and to reroute cabling that's currently blocking what little airflow exists.
The correct sequence of works
Ventilation should be designed as a pair — an inlet low down and an outlet high up — rather than a single opening, because a single hole doesn't create the airflow you need; heat needs somewhere to escape while cooler air is drawn in below it.
- Form a low-level inlet vent and a high-level outlet vent so warm air can actually leave the compartment
- Split heat-producing equipment across separate ventilated compartments rather than stacking it all in one
- Route all cabling through dedicated chases that don't cross or block the new vent openings
- Add an active extract fan where the equipment load is high enough that passive venting alone won't clear the heat
Why a single vent hole or a fan alone doesn't solve it
Drilling one hole in the back panel gives air somewhere to escape from, eventually, but without a matching low inlet there's no real air movement through the cabinet — hot air just sits near the top with nowhere fresh coming in beneath it.
Adding a fan without any vent openings has the same problem: a fan can move air, but only if there's an air path for it to move air through. Fit one into a sealed box and it will just recirculate the same warm air.
Interfaces with other trades
Any rerouting of cabling should involve whoever installed the AV equipment, so connections aren't disturbed unnecessarily. Where an active extract fan is added, it needs a spurred electrical supply installed by a qualified electrician.
If there's a fireplace below the media wall, its heat output needs factoring into the ventilation design for the compartment above — this is worth checking with whoever installed the fireplace if the specification isn't documented.
How you know the repair has worked
The clearest test is simply running the equipment as normal for the same length of time that previously caused a shutdown, and checking it no longer cuts out or feels excessively hot to the touch. A cabinet with working ventilation should feel noticeably cooler at the back panel than it did before.

Will adding vents spoil the look of the media wall?+
Vents can be designed discreetly — low-level slots behind a plinth, or a ventilated panel that matches the surrounding finish — so the cabinet still looks clean while actually working thermally.
Can this be fixed without removing any joinery?+
In some cases limited retrofitting is possible from the front or through existing gaps, but where the cabinet is genuinely sealed, some panel removal is usually needed to form a proper vent path.
How do I know if I need an active fan rather than just vents?+
If the equipment stack includes higher-output devices like an amplifier, or the compartment is particularly small, passive vents alone may not clear heat fast enough and an active extract fan is the more reliable route.
