
Laying a second layer of chipboard over an existing bouncy loft floor, or adding extra noggins between the joists, might reduce the springiness slightly to the foot, but it doesn't change the fact that the joists underneath are still undersized for what they're carrying. The deflection continues, just distributed slightly differently, and the ceiling below keeps cracking.
A proper repair adds structure that's actually sized for storage or occupied loading, independent of the original ceiling joists.
The correct approach
Whether new joists or a raised deck system is right depends on the loft's insulation depth, headroom, and how the floor is going to be used — a system genuinely built for storage or light use, laid out properly for the span, is the point, not the specific product used to achieve it.
- Assess existing joist size, span and condition, including any notching for services
- Design new floor structure sized for the intended loading — this is a calculation, not a guess
- Either add new, correctly sized joists alongside the existing ones, or install a raised loft-leg deck that spans independently over the insulation
- Relocate any concentrated load, such as a water tank, onto a properly supported point rather than an isolated joist
- Repair any notched or damaged joists found during the work rather than boarding over them unaddressed
- Make good the ceiling below once the new structure is confirmed sound
Why more boarding doesn't fix it
Extra boarding spreads point loads slightly better across the existing joists, which can genuinely reduce localised springiness in some cases, but it does nothing to increase the actual bending strength of joists sized only for a plasterboard ceiling. Under sustained or repeated loading, the same deflection returns, and the ceiling cracks continue.
Never rely on the original ceiling joists for anything approaching habitable or heavy storage loading — that's the core mistake behind almost every case we see, and no amount of surface-level boarding changes the structural reality underneath.
Interfaces with other work
If a water tank or other services sit in the loft, relocating or properly supporting them needs coordinating with whoever maintains the heating or plumbing system, since moving a cold water tank affects pipe runs. If the ceiling below is being made good, that plasterwork should wait until the structural work above is finished and confirmed stable, not run in parallel.
How you know the repair has worked
The floor should feel solid underfoot across its full area, with no perceptible spring even under normal walking and storage use. The ceiling below should show no further cracking once redecorated — any new cracking appearing after the strengthening work is a sign the design or execution needs revisiting.
