Cost guide
Media wall cost: what affects the price
The cost of a media wall depends on how much joinery it includes, whether it houses an electric fire, the lighting, the finish and any changes to sockets or cables behind it. A simple framed wall with a recess for the television is a very different job from a full-width unit with cupboards, shelving and a fire, so compare specifications before comparing prices.

Two ways to build a media wall
Many media walls are built as a framed and boarded false wall, with recesses formed for the television, a fire and shelves. Others are made from cabinetry, with doors and drawers below and open shelves either side. Some combine both: a boarded centre section with fitted cupboards in the alcoves. Each approach uses different materials and labour, and the choice affects storage, appearance and how easy it is to change the equipment later.
The width and height of the wall set the overall scale. A wall that runs the full width of the room, up to the ceiling, needs more materials and more careful finishing than a central feature. Chimney breasts, uneven walls and skirting all have to be dealt with, and these hidden details often explain why media wall prices vary between quotes that look similar on paper.
The main cost drivers
| Element | What to settle |
|---|---|
| Structure | Framed false wall, cabinetry or a combination |
| Electric fire | Model, size, ventilation and clearances from the manufacturer |
| Storage | Number of cupboards, drawers and shelves |
| Lighting | LED strips, spotlights, switching and drivers |
| Wiring and sockets | New or moved sockets, aerial and data points |
| Finish | Painted, veneered or textured surfaces and decoration |
Media walls with a fire
The average cost of a media wall with a fire depends heavily on the appliance chosen. Electric fires vary in size, depth and features, and each comes with installation instructions setting out the recess size, ventilation and distances from the television and combustible materials. Select the fire before the wall is designed, because changing the model later can mean rebuilding the recess.
Heat from a fire can affect a television mounted directly above it, so the instructions for both pieces of equipment should be followed. A built-in fire also needs a dedicated power supply, and that electrical work should be carried out by a suitably qualified electrician. Our handbook explains common causes of overheating in media walls and how to avoid them.
Questions that make quotes comparable
- What is the overall width, height and depth of the wall?
- Is it a boarded frame, fitted cabinets or a combination?
- Which fire and television sizes is the design based on?
- How many cupboards, drawers and shelves are included?
- What lighting is included and how is it switched?
- Who carries out any electrical changes and is that included?
- What finish is included and is decoration part of the price?
Using a cost calculator sensibly
A media wall cost calculator can help you compare the effect of adding a fire or extra storage, but it cannot see your room. It will not account for a sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a socket in the wrong place or access to the room. Use the result to shape the brief rather than as the cost of media wall installation in your home.
Tembok designs and fits media walls as part of its joinery work from a workshop in Biddenden. FAQs
Common questions
What is the average cost of a media wall in the UK?
There is no reliable single figure because size, construction, fire, storage, lighting and finish vary so much. A written quote based on your room and specification is the useful comparison.
Does adding a fire increase the cost of a media wall?
Yes. The fire itself, the recess built to its instructions and its power supply all add to the scope. Choose the model before the wall is designed.
Is a boarded media wall cheaper than fitted cabinets?
It can be, depending on the size and finish. Cabinetry adds doors, drawers and hardware, while a boarded wall relies on careful framing and plastering or finishing.
Can the cables be hidden behind a media wall?
Yes. Cable routes are planned before the wall is closed in, with access left for future changes. Any new sockets need a suitably qualified electrician.
