Alcove cupboards made around your room
Alcove cupboards turn the recess beside a chimney breast into accessible storage without making the whole wall a wardrobe or media installation. The design begins with what you need to keep behind the doors.
Decide what the alcove must hold
The contents establish the useful depth and internal layout. Books, games, paperwork and larger household items need different shelf spacing, and a cupboard that looks balanced from the sofa may still be awkward to use. Measure the items that will actually live there. Adjustable shelves can accommodate changing contents, while a fixed division can help support a particular arrangement. The decision should be made before the doors and external proportions are settled.
A low cupboard with shelves above keeps the upper recess visually open. A taller enclosed unit conceals more but changes the character of the fireplace wall. Two alcoves do not have to be identical if one is shallower or affected by a doorway. Visual balance can come from aligned shelf levels and consistent fronts without forcing equal-sized carcasses into unequal spaces. Existing cornices, picture rails and skirting are part of that composition, not obstacles to hide without discussion.
Fit the recess rather than filling the gaps
Alcove walls can taper, lean or meet the chimney breast at an unexpected angle. Measuring at one height is not enough to describe the opening. The front line, floor level and return against the wall need assessing together so the finished cupboard does not rely on an oversized filler. A made-to-measure approach allows the visible joinery to follow the room while giving shelves and doors a workable internal geometry.
Door swing is easy to overlook in a narrow living room. A door must clear the adjacent hearth, furniture and skirting, and a handle should be comfortable to reach. Push-to-open fronts create one appearance; visible knobs or pulls create another. The depth of the cupboard top and any overhang also affect the walking route past the fireplace. A sample of the intended finish helps relate the new fronts to existing doors and other timber in the room.
Keep cupboards distinct from wardrobes and media walls
A wardrobe fitted into a bedroom alcove is organised around hanging lengths, clothing access and often a full-height frontage. A living-room alcove cupboard is usually concerned with shorter storage, display shelves and the fireplace elevation. A media wall adds screen positions, equipment ventilation and a more involved cable arrangement. If the brief begins to include those functions, the design should be reconsidered rather than stretching a simple cupboard into a different installation.
Before fitting, identify sockets, vents and other features that must remain accessible. A cupboard beside an active fireplace must respect the relevant clearances and should not block existing ventilation. Agree how skirting, wall decoration and flooring edges will be treated, especially if an old unit is removed first. Tembok’s Biddenden workshop and carpentry service provide a route from a free site visit to a written quote, with the cupboard layout and surrounding making good defined together.
Alcove Cupboards — frequently asked
Can alcove cupboards be different widths?
Yes. Recesses are often unequal, so each cupboard can fit its own opening. Aligning visible lines and using related door proportions can make the pair feel deliberate without wasting usable width.
Can I fit wardrobes in alcoves instead?
For a bedroom, hanging storage may be the better brief. The depth, door arrangement and interior then need designing as a wardrobe, not copying a shallow living-room cupboard.
What affects the cost of an alcove cupboard?
The number of units, internal divisions, shelving above, frontage material and amount of fitting influence the scope. Removal of old joinery and decorative work should also be stated when a quote is prepared.
Should I decorate before the cupboards are fitted?
Agree the sequence with the fitting plan. Some wall preparation may need doing first, while final decoration at scribed edges and disturbed skirting may follow installation. The written scope should make those responsibilities clear.
