The good news is that most squeaks in a loft floor can be cured from above without touching the ceiling of the room below. The exception is movement at the joist bearings, which needs access.
Find the source before you fix anything
Walk the floor slowly in bare feet with the room quiet and mark every noise with masking tape. Then get someone to walk while you listen from the room below, which tells you whether the noise is at the surface or deeper in the structure.
Press down beside the noise with your hand. If the squeak repeats under hand pressure alone it is a loose board or a nail. If it only happens under full body weight and feels like a deflection, it is more likely to be movement in the joist or at its bearing.
The common causes
Nails instead of screws is the classic. A ring shank nail through chipboard flexes and the shank rubs in the timber every time you step on it. Solid floor boards fixed with cut nails do the same as they dry and shrink.
Second is chipboard laid without glue in the tongue and groove joints, so board edges rub. Third is services: a pipe or a cable clipped tight against the underside of the boards, or a heating pipe passing through a notch that is too tight, which ticks as it expands.
Fourth, and specific to loft conversions, is a new floor joist bearing on a steel beam without a resilient packing, or sitting hard against the old ceiling joists. Every step transfers a small movement into that contact point.

Fixes that work from above
Screwing the decking down properly cures the majority. Locate the joists, then fix with the correct length screws at sensible centres, avoiding any pipe or cable run, which is why we always check with a detector first. Old nails come out or are punched below.
For rubbing board edges, running a bead of adhesive into the joint from above where the boards can be lifted, or injecting into the joint where they cannot, stops the movement. Where a floating layer of acoustic insulation was fitted, check it is not compressed unevenly, because that alone can cause a rocking board.
When it needs more than screws
If the noise is at the bearings, the fix is at the ends of the joists, which means access from below or lifting boards at the perimeter. Packing with a resilient strip, adding a restraint or fixing a joist properly to its hanger removes the movement.
Loft conversions also carry a sound insulation requirement, so any work that opens the floor up is a good moment to check the acoustic layer is complete and continuous. It is much cheaper to correct while the floor is open than to come back to it.
None of this is dramatic work, and a squeaky floor is very rarely a safety issue. It is a finishing fault, and it should have been dealt with before handover.
Common questions
Is a squeaking loft floor a structural problem?
Almost never. It signals small movement between components rather than a lack of strength. Deflection you can see, or a floor that feels springy across the middle, is a different matter and is worth checking.
Can it be fixed without lifting the carpet?
Sometimes, using screws driven through the covering with a shield for a snagged fibre, but the tidy result comes from lifting the covering. On boarded floors we work from above with the boards exposed.
Why did it only start six months after the conversion?
Timber and chipboard shrink as they dry through a first heating season, which loosens fixings and opens joints. This is why squeaks often appear in the first winter.
Will it get worse?
It tends to plateau once the timber has stabilised, but the rubbing surfaces wear, so a squeak rarely disappears on its own.
Should the original builder come back to fix it?
It is a reasonable snagging item to raise. If they will not, it is a modest job for another firm and we are happy to look at it and quote.
