Timber cladding for your home
Timber cladding changes the outer face of a building, but the boards are only one part of the job. A useful proposal also addresses the supporting build-up, openings and the way water leaves the wall.
Design the elevation as a whole
Begin with the shape of the elevation and the elements that will remain. Window positions, door heads, roof edges and changes in wall level influence where boards can start and finish. Horizontal and vertical arrangements draw the eye differently, and a small sample cannot show the effect across the whole house. A drawing of the board layout helps reveal narrow pieces beside openings and awkward corner junctions before material is ordered.
Cladding can form the finish of a new extension or replace an existing exterior covering. Those jobs require different preparation. When a covering is removed, the underlying wall and existing moisture details need assessing rather than immediately hiding them again. The quote should describe the supporting construction and the treatment of transitions to brick, render or another material. Fascias, soffits and guttering remain separate elements, even where they are coordinated within the same exterior project.
Cedar, other timber and composite choices
Cedar cladding is one timber option, not a single standard appearance. Board profile, finish and orientation change the result, and the maintenance expectation should be discussed before choosing. Some owners want a consistent coated colour; others prefer timber to weather naturally. Those approaches should not be confused when judging a sample. Ask how exposed edges and repaired boards will look over time, particularly where sunlight and shelter differ across an elevation.
Composite cladding and cedar also require a like-for-like comparison. Consider the complete system, its fixing details and the desired finish rather than assuming the material with the simpler purchase price produces the simpler job. If a modified timber such as Accoya is proposed, request the specific product and finish within the quote. An online Accoya timber cladding price does not include the preparation, trims, access or installation needed for a particular house.
Junctions and practical installation decisions
The bottom edge, corners and window surrounds are where a cladding design becomes a working exterior. The construction needs a planned route for drainage and ventilation appropriate to the chosen system. Fixings, board movement and the condition of supporting battens deserve the same attention as the face finish. Vents, cables, outside taps and lights should be located on the elevation plan so their penetrations are resolved rather than improvised after the boards have been fitted.
For cedar cladding repairs, first identify whether damage is confined to individual boards or connected to a wider detailing problem. Replacing a split board will not correct a failing junction that keeps wetting the supporting construction. Timber cladding cost therefore depends on far more than the covered area. Removal, scaffold or access, substrate work, board specification and finishing all influence the quote. Tembok can discuss those items at a free site visit and set out the agreed work in writing.
Timber Cladding — frequently asked
Does cedar cladding need maintenance?
The maintenance plan depends on whether it is left to weather or receives a coating. Coated timber needs the chosen finish maintained according to its specification; sheltered and exposed faces may change appearance differently.
Can individual cedar boards be repaired?
Local replacement can be appropriate when the backing and surrounding details remain sound. Matching weathered timber exactly may be difficult, so the repair should be considered across the visible elevation rather than one board in isolation.
Is timber cladding price the same as installation cost?
No. Board purchase is one part of the total. Supporting work, fixings, trims, removal and safe access need including to make two installation quotes comparable.
Does this include new gutters and fascias?
Those items can be considered alongside cladding but should be named separately in the scope. Keeping them visible in the quote helps distinguish a board replacement from a wider exterior refurbishment.
