Walk-in wardrobes combine wall-run cabinetry with, in many designs, a freestanding or semi-freestanding island unit in the middle of the room — a different structural challenge from wall-fixed furniture because an island has no wall to lean on for rigidity. Add glass-fronted cabinets, jewellery drawers and LED lighting and there's a lot of detail a headline price can hide.
A proper specification separates wall unit construction, island unit construction, hardware grade and the electrical work for lighting into distinct, checkable items.
Wall-run cabinetry and carcass detail
Wall units follow the same standards as any fitted furniture — 18mm carcass board, named hinge and runner brands, and confirmed scribing to walls, floor and ceiling. In a walk-in wardrobe this run is often longer and taller than a bedroom wardrobe, so the quote should state whether continuous cornice or pelmet detailing is included to finish the top run cleanly.
Island unit construction and rigidity
A freestanding island in the centre of the room needs its own base plinth or feet, and the quote should state how it's fixed to the floor for stability — some are simply weighted by their own construction, others are bolted down through the plinth, which matters if the room has underfloor heating pipes below that a fixing must avoid.
Drawer construction in an island is usually the highest-spec item in the whole design, since jewellery and accessory drawers are viewed and used constantly — dovetailed solid wood drawer boxes with velvet or suede linings should be named specifically if that's what's being quoted, rather than described vaguely as 'luxury drawers'.
Hinge, runner and glass-front hardware
Glass-fronted display cabinets need the glass type specified (toughened safety glass is standard for cabinet doors) and the hinge brand rated for the weight of a glass door, which is heavier than an equivalent timber or MDF door. Soft-close should be confirmed here too.
Drawer runners for accessory and jewellery drawers should be full-extension and soft-close as standard, given how frequently these drawers get opened, and the brand should be named.
Lighting circuits and transformer location
LED lighting inside a walk-in wardrobe is now close to standard, but the electrical detail is where quotes vary: PIR sensor activation versus a manual switch, dimmable versus fixed brightness, and where the transformer is located for future access. This should be a distinct line item coordinated with an electrician for the circuit itself, separate from the joinery.
What cheap quotes miss
Flooring transition between the wardrobe and adjoining bedroom, ventilation if the room has no window (a walk-in wardrobe converted from a small bedroom can suffer condensation without airflow), and making good to walls and skirting once old fitted furniture is stripped out are all common gaps in a lower-cost quote.
