Polished concrete covers a family of finishes rather than one product: concrete poured in situ or cast in formwork off site, then ground back to expose or smooth the surface, and finally sealed. It can form floors, stair flights, worktops and even thresholds as continuous, seamless elements.
It suits a particular design intent — a deliberately industrial, monolithic look — more than it suits every kitchen or living space, and it comes with fixed processes that can't be rushed.
In situ versus cast off site
In situ concrete floors are poured on site, cured in place and ground back afterwards, which suits large open-plan ground floors and works well with underfloor heating cast into the same slab.
Worktops and stairs are more often cast in formwork off site or in a controlled area, then finished and installed as a unit, which gives more control over edge quality and finish consistency than working directly on site.
Where it belongs
Open-plan ground floors where a seamless surface is wanted across kitchen, dining and living zones suit concrete well, particularly alongside underfloor heating, which concrete conducts effectively.
Cast stairs and concrete worktops work as design statements in the right setting — a new-build or substantially altered space where the structural and design decisions are made together rather than retrofitted.
Where it's the wrong call, and what we specify instead
In a period property where the existing floor structure or joists weren't designed for the weight of a poured slab, concrete flooring is often the wrong specification without significant structural work first — a qualified structural engineer needs to assess the existing structure before this goes anywhere near a quote.
For a small kitchen where a client wants a soft, warm worktop, concrete's industrial character and weight work against the brief — we'd specify solid timber or quartz instead.
Anywhere a completely blemish-free, uniform surface is expected, concrete is the wrong material — hairline crazing is a normal characteristic of the finish, not a defect, and clients who can't accept that should be steered towards quartz or porcelain instead.
Colour, aggregate exposure and how the finish is controlled
The final look is set by how deep the grinding goes: a light grind leaves mostly cement paste visible with a smooth, even tone, while a deeper grind exposes the aggregate stones within the mix for a more textured, speckled surface. Pigment can be added to the mix before pouring for a consistent colour throughout the thickness, rather than relying on a surface stain that can wear through.
The sealer applied at the end — typically a penetrating sealer or a topical polyurethane — determines how the surface handles spills and staining day to day, and it's reapplied periodically rather than being a one-off treatment, similar in principle to oiling a timber worktop.

Common questions
Is polished concrete cold underfoot?+
On its own, yes, but it works very well with underfloor heating cast into the same slab, which is how most residential concrete floors are specified.
Can any floor take a concrete finish?+
No — a poured concrete floor is heavy, and any existing suspended timber floor needs a structural assessment before it's considered. This isn't a decision to make from a design brief alone.
Does concrete crack?+
Fine hairline crazing across the surface is normal and expected with concrete, distinct from structural cracking, which would need investigating separately if it appeared.
