Why wall construction decides this, not preference
Pre-1919 solid brick, stone or cob walls were built without a cavity or damp-proof course, relying instead on moisture passing through the wall and evaporating from the surface. Lime render is permeable and allows that movement to continue; cement render is far less permeable and blocks it.
Modern cavity wall construction, in contrast, is designed to shed water at the outer leaf and keep the cavity dry, so cement render's lower permeability is not a problem there in the way it is on a solid wall.
What happens when cement goes on a solid wall
Moisture that can no longer evaporate through the render migrates sideways and finds another route out — often through the mortar joints or the render itself, where it eventually causes cracking, blowing and detachment. Behind the render, trapped moisture in the wall can encourage timber decay at embedded joist ends and accelerate frost damage to the masonry.
This is a slow failure. Cement render on a solid wall can look fine for a good number of years before the underlying damage becomes visible, which is part of why it keeps getting specified on the wrong buildings.
Working with lime
Lime render is more flexible than cement, which suits the small ongoing movement in old solid walls and traditional timber-framed construction without cracking. It takes longer to cure and needs more careful application and curing conditions, which is reflected in labour time rather than material cost alone.
Access and scaffold considerations
Lime render is applied in multiple coats with curing time required between each, so scaffold needs to stay up for longer than a cement render job of the same area, which affects both programme and access cost.
Cement render can be applied and finished more quickly, which is part of its appeal on a straightforward job, but that speed is precisely what makes it unsuitable where the wall needs a breathable finish rather than a fast one.
What a written quote must specify
A lime render quote should state the number of coats, the lime mix ratio being used, and the curing time allowed between coats and before decoration, since rushing lime render is a common cause of early failure.
Either quote should confirm whether the existing render is being fully stripped back to bare masonry or patched over, since patching cement render onto a wall that needs lime defeats the purpose of switching material at all.

How do I know if my wall is solid or cavity construction?+
Solid walls are usually thinner overall and, where brick, show a header-and-stretcher bonding pattern with no consistent cavity gap. If in doubt, this should be confirmed properly before choosing a render — it is not something to guess at.
