Why bathroom silicone keeps failing and going black

Homeowner wants to know why the silicone around their bath or shower keeps failing repeatedly.

You reseal it, it looks clean for a while, and then within a few months the same joint is splitting, peeling at one end, or turning black along its length. Doing it again with a better-quality tube of sealant rarely changes the outcome, because the sealant itself is very rarely the actual point of failure.

Silicone joints in a bathroom are simple in principle — they seal a movement gap between two surfaces — but that simplicity is exactly why repeated failure is worth taking seriously rather than just redoing. A joint that keeps failing is telling you either that there's more movement at that junction than silicone can accommodate, or that water is already getting behind the tiling and the blackening you can see is only the visible edge of it.

What the pattern of failure actually shows

Splitting along the middle of a run, rather than at the ends, usually points to movement — something behind the joint is flexing more than the sealant can stretch to cope with. Blackening without obvious splitting more often points to a mould problem, which can be a sealant grade or ventilation issue on its own, but can equally be a sign that moisture is reaching the joint from behind rather than just sitting on the surface.

The likely causes

Movement in an unsupported bath or shower tray is one of the most common causes. If a bath isn't properly supported along its length and underneath, it flexes slightly every time someone steps in or shifts their weight, and that flex transfers straight into the silicone joint at the tile line, well beyond what any sealant is designed to absorb repeatedly.

Sealing over a wet or dirty joint is a straightforward installation fault — silicone needs a genuinely clean, dry substrate to bond to, and sealing over residual moisture or old sealant residue means the new bead never properly adheres in the first place, so it fails quickly regardless of quality.

Using the wrong grade of sealant for the location is common where a general-purpose or decorator's sealant has been used instead of a proper sanitary-grade product, which is formulated to resist the fungal growth that causes blackening.

No fall to the shower tray, so water pools at the edge rather than draining away, keeps the joint permanently wet, which both accelerates mould growth and stresses the seal far more than an occasional splash would.

How to work out which applies

  • Step into the bath or onto the tray and check for any noticeable flex or movement — a bath that rocks even slightly is not properly supported.
  • Check behind and around the joint, where access allows, for signs the substrate is damp or has been affected previously.
  • Look at whether the same exact joint has failed repeatedly over a short period despite reasonable cleaning — that pattern, more than a single failure, points to an underlying cause rather than bad luck.
  • Check whether water actually drains away from the tray edge or tends to sit there after use.

Why a repeatedly failing joint is worth taking seriously

A joint that fails once might genuinely just be poor original workmanship. A joint that keeps failing after being properly redone usually means water is finding its way past the surface repeatedly, and behind bathroom tiling that means it's reaching plasterboard, timber studwork or floor structure that doesn't cope well with sustained damp. Silicone failure at the surface is often the earliest visible sign of a problem that's already established behind the tiles.
