The console shuts itself off mid-game, or the amplifier cuts out after an hour of use, and it only happens when the equipment is sitting inside the media wall cabinet — take it out onto an open shelf and the problem disappears.
That single observation is usually enough to tell you this isn't the equipment failing, it's the enclosure it's sitting in. Heat that has nowhere to go builds up until the equipment's own thermal protection shuts it down.
Separating the symptom from the cause
The shutdown or the hot casing is the equipment protecting itself; it's a symptom of the temperature inside the cabinet, not a fault to be diagnosed in the electronics themselves. The cause sits in how the joinery was designed and built.
Causes, in order of likelihood
Sealed media wall cabinets are built more often than not, because a fully closed front looks cleaner — but a sealed box with electronics inside is exactly the wrong combination.
- A sealed cabinet with no inlet or outlet for air to move through at all
- Multiple heat-producing devices stacked together in a single unvented compartment, multiplying the heat load in one space
- Cable congestion bundled across whatever small gaps exist, blocking the little airflow the cabinet does have
- A fireplace or heater unit fitted below the media wall with no allowance made for the extra heat it adds to the cavity above
How to check which cause applies
Look for any deliberate air path in the cabinet — a low-level vent, gaps in the back panel, a ventilated door. If there's genuinely no route for air to enter and leave, that's the primary cause and nothing else needs to be checked further before that's addressed.
Work out roughly what heat output the stacked equipment produces. An amplifier, a games console and a set-top box all generating heat in the same small compartment is a very different load to a single low-power device.
Check the back of the cabinet for cable runs. If cables are bundled directly across a vent opening or gap, they may be blocking most of the airflow the design was relying on.
If there's a fireplace below the media wall, check whether the cavity above it was designed with that heat source in mind, or whether the media wall was fitted afterwards without the extra heat being accounted for.
Self-diagnosis before assuming the worst
Some checks are worth doing before assuming the joinery needs opening up. Note exactly which piece of equipment shuts down first and how long it takes, since the most heat-sensitive device in the stack usually fails before the others and points to where the heat is concentrating.
Try temporarily moving the worst-affected device to an open shelf for a day or two, if that's practical, and see whether the shutdowns stop. That simple test confirms the enclosure is the cause before any work is committed to.
Seasonal behaviour worth noting
Overheating inside a sealed media wall is often worse in summer, when the room itself is already warmer and there's less difference between the air inside the cabinet and the equipment's own heat output, so the margin before shutdown is smaller.
A cabinet that only causes problems on the hottest days but seems fine through winter still has an underlying ventilation shortfall — it's simply being masked by a cooler ambient room temperature for part of the year, not fixed.

Is this dangerous, or just inconvenient?+
Persistent overheating shortens the working life of electronic equipment and can, in poorly ventilated cases with certain equipment, present a fire risk if heat has genuinely nowhere to escape. It shouldn't be left unaddressed even if it seems like a minor annoyance.
Will a fan fix it without changing the joinery?+
A fan can help if there's at least some air path for it to move air through, but in a fully sealed cabinet a fan alone still has nowhere to push the hot air, so the cabinet itself usually needs a vent added as well.
Does the type of equipment matter?+
Yes — amplifiers and games consoles run considerably hotter than something like a router or smart speaker, so a cabinet that's fine for lighter equipment can still overheat once higher-output devices are added to the same compartment.
